Information on upcoming strikes at terminals in the United States
Upcoming strikes at terminals in the United States - Important information for our customers
Dear Customers,
We would like to draw your attention to an important event that may affect transportation operations and supply chains not only in the United States, but around the world. Strikes at port terminals on the east coast of the US and the Gulf of Mexico region will begin, as announced, on October 1, 2024. Below you will find details about this situation and our recommendations on how best to prepare for possible disruptions in logistics.
Key information:
- Strike start date: strikes are scheduled to begin on October 1, expected to last several weeks
- Ports affected by the protests: All ports of the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico region
- Potential additional costs: as of now, almost all shipowners have announced strike-related freight surcharges ranging from $400 to $1,500/TEU. The surcharges will take effect from 11/10/2024 at the earliest, with no unanimous position from shipowners as of today on whether the surcharge will be implemented even if strikes end before the implementation date. They explain that the possible financial impact of the strikes related to the global disruption of supply chains could, according to shipowners, be felt for several more months after the protests end. It is also not yet clear at this time whether these allowances will be paid on the loading or unloading side of the cargo.
Possible effects on companies:
The strike could cause significant delays in deliveries, disruptions in the unloading and loading of goods, and a significant increase in logistics costs. There is a risk that shipping and air freight deadlines will be extended and their schedules may change.
What can you do?
To minimize potential operational problems, we recommend taking the following steps:
1. monitor the situation: Please keep up to date on negotiations and possible changes in strike schedules.
2. Planning alternative routes: If possible, we suggest considering alternative delivery routes, such as through other ports or airport terminals.
3. Adjusting orders: If possible, it is advisable to speed up shipments of goods taking into account the risk of possible delays
4. Contacting suppliers: Working with suppliers to get up-to-date information on the status of shipments and any changes in logistics can help you better manage the situation.
