Justification for the Road Tariff Change Due to Toll Fee Changes in Germany from December 1, 2023

The change in the road tariff is necessitated by the forthcoming modifications to the toll charges set to take effect on December 1, 2023, in Germany. The new regulations, which have been passed by the German Bundestag, introduce additional charges for CO2 emissions in road transport, in addition to costs related to infrastructure, noise, and air pollution. 
 
This new form of the fee will significantly increase the costs associated with toll charges by as much as 83% (changing from 0.19 EUR to 0.348 EUR per kilometre). Under the new rate system, vehicles with internal combustion engines will be divided into CO2 emission classes from 1 to 6. Simultaneously, the exemption from toll charges for gas-powered trucks, which will be in effect from January 1, 2024, will be abolished. This means that these vehicles will be subject to the same rates as diesel-powered trucks. 
 
In light of these changes and new regulations, it is imperative to update the road tariff to account for the substantial changes in operational costs associated with road transport in Germany from December 1, 2023.

To ensure you have the best knowledge regarding the new road rates implemented on toll roads in Germany, in the quotations we have been providing since September, we have included information about the current rate (taking into account the applicable toll fee) and how this rate will change from December 1, 2023, considering the new toll fee, which we have distinguished in each quotation.

All current quotations take into account the current toll fee (valid until the end of November 2023) and illustrate the new fee effective from December 2023.
